This past weekend saw the 2015 Ontario Association of Home Inspectors’ Educational Conference come to Burlington, Ontario. I want to start off this brief post by thanking the conference committee, who did a great job organizing the event. One of the things that really bothers me about some conferences is that lack of information that you get about the conference ahead of time – things like schedules, speakers, topics, etc. Andrew Dixon and his fellow committee members communicated well and often ahead of the course, which I believe contributed to a well-attended conference. The session that I lead, “Marketing Your Home Inspection Business for Growth”, was delivered to a full room. One of the attendees came up to me after the session and told me that I had “kicked his ass.” Which really was my goal. I feel that too many home inspectors have weak businesses because the home inspector doesn’t make great use of non-inspection time. There’s lots for a sole proprietor to do to build a better business. I hope that I inspired a few people to arouse their entrepreneurial spirit.
Saturday night’s Open Mic event was the premier event for J.J. and the HI Boys. That’s me on the left with the bass. I had a great time, and I hope that the audience did too. They stayed, anyway, and that’s always a great sign! The Clarke Engineering-branded guitar picks that I handed out were a fun promotional item. It’s nice when people ask for more.

Of greatest interest to me were Inspector Services Group, URS Insurance, and Home Improvement Professionals, all of whom I either do business with, or plan to.
The conference also gave me an opportunity to catch up with fellow home inspectors from around the province. Alas, time is pretty short – it would have taken me a week to catch up with all of my colleagues there. A special tip of my hat to a former student of mine, Murray Parish, who was chosen to lead OAHI/CAHPI-Ontario as its new President!
