The Weekend Wrap-Up

The Weekend Wrap-Up

Speaking at the OAHI AGM

Speaking at the OAHI AGM

We are right in the middle of an interesting couple of weeks for Ontario home inspectors. This past weekend was the 2016 Education Conference of the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors. The event was well-organized and well-attended. The education sessions that I sat in on were valuable as well as entertaining. I had a great crowd attend my own session, called You’ve Been Served. The participation from the audience was definitely appreciated. I also got great feedback from attendees about the keynote speech that I gave during lunch on Saturday. It’s nice to know that people appreciated some of my thoughts on the future of the home inspection business in Ontario.

On Friday night, the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors held their Annual General Meeting, where I was invited to speak as the President of the Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors. Again, the reception was great, and I think that the meeting itself was positive and showed why OAHI has been the province’s source for professional home inspectors for more than 20 years.

At both the annual general meeting and the education conference, there were two very timely topics being constantly discussed. One was the upcoming release of the A770 Home Inspection Standard from the Canadian Standards Association. My information is that the CSA will be announcing/releasing the standard this coming Friday. You can read some of my other blogs about this standard. While the A770 standard won’t change things overnight, I believe that it will soon come to be the de facto standard for home inspection in Ontario. I’ve also just been informed that the A770 standard has been approved by the National Standards Council as a National Standard of Canada, a special status given to standards that uphold national public interests.

The other timely topic was Bill 165 – An Act to Regulate Home Inspectors. I was in attendance at the Ontario Legislature last Thursday for the Second Reading of this bill. Bill 165 now goes to a committee that will examine it clause by clause. After that, it will go to Third Reading. It seemed to have the support of all parties during the Second Reading, so I am sure that it will also pass Third Reading and go on to receive Royal Assent.

That’s a lot of things going on for home inspectors. It’s been a while since there were as many changes as this in our field. Let’s look forward to exciting times ahead.

In unrelated news, the National Home Show starts this weekend. It’s time for me to try to source out discount admission tickets and promotion/coupon codes to save a little money.  Maybe I’ll see you there!
