At the 2016 National Conference of the Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors, held this past weekend in Calgary, Alberta, I had to great pleasure to announce, as CAHPI President, that the CAHPI Board voted to accept and adopt the A770 Home Inspection Standard that was recently published by the Canadian Standards Association.
I am especially proud of this for several reasons. One is that CAHPI is the first home inspection association anywhere to adopt the A770 Standard. As I have written about in previous articles and blogs, this is the first home inspection standard to be developed with the input and participation of numerous stakeholders. Most home inspection standards of practice are written by groups of home inspectors themselves, and represent what home inspectors want to do – not what other stakeholders, including the public – want and need home inspectors to do. Listening to the needs of the market is important to ensure that home inspectors stay relevant in a changing world. Many home inspectors have been resistant to change, but the Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors has established itself as the leader in the industry by being the first to recognize the value of the A770 CSA Standard – not only to home inspectors, but also to the home buyers and sellers who are the most directly affected by our work.
Another reason that I am happy to see the CSA Standard adopted by CAHPI is that I have personal pride in the development of the A770 Standard. I was first approached to participate in the CSA Technical Committee in 2013 and have been a part of the creation of this standard ever since then.
There is one other point to be made, I think. I mentioned in an earlier post that the A770 Standard had been accepted as a National Standard of Canada. This means that the Standards Council of Canada (a body that reports to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development) has recognized this standard to be the official Canadian standard in the area of home inspection.

Congratulations to the Canadian Assocation of Home and Property Inspectors for their leadership and vision in the development of the home inspection industry in Canada!
